RESUMO

We report the design of an integrated photon pair source based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM), implemented in an integrated micro-ring resonator in the silicon nitride platform (Si3N4). The signal photon is generated with emission at 606 nm and bandwidth of 3.98 MHz, matching the spectral properties of praseodymium ions (Pr), while the idler photon is generated at 1430.5 nm matching the wavelength of a CWDM channel in the E-band. This novel, to the best of our knowledge, device is designed to interact with a quantum memory based on a Y2SiO5 crystal doped with Pr3+ ions, in which we used cavity-enhanced SFWM along with dispersion engineering to reach the required wavelength and the few megahertz signal photon spectral bandwidth.

RESUMO

Parasites cause losses in animal production. Parasite infection in ruminants has been estimated to be a major problem causing more than 3 billion USD per year, from which 60% corresponds to the sheep industry. Treatment is based on the use of synthetic anthelmintics; however, repeated application or under dosage have resulted in the selection of nematodes resistant to anthelmintics. The objective of the present work was to perform a diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites in sheep kept under different zootechnical management. Ninety female sheep were used, most of them pregnant. Sampling was performed monthly from December 2015 to June 2016 (flock 5 until April). Fecal samples were collected from the rectum; the McMaster technique was performed, morphological characteristics were observed, oocysts and eggs were counted per gram of feces (opg and epg), frequency and intensity were obtained. Faecal culture was performed for feces that had a positive result, infective larvae were obtained and taxonomically identified. At the end of the study, a dewormer (fenbendazole) was administered and its effect was measured. The frequency of gastrointestinal parasites was 100%. The highest opg was 3,600 (flock 3, March, 2016), the epg for cestodes was 2800 (flock 1, January, 2016) and for gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) was 25,000 (flock 1, May, 2016); the intensity was variable and it was increased by peripartum. Protists (Eimeria spp), cestodes (Moniezia) and nematodes (Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Chabertia ovina. Teladorsagia, Oesophagostomum, Nematodirus and Trichuris ovis) were identified. No previous diagnosis is performed in flocks, and sometimes dewormers are administered, even though resistance to ivermectin and benzimidazole is suspected. Flock management, its feeding system and its conditions were determinant for the observed results; therefore, it is necessary to count with a diagnosis that provides information about the parasitic population and its dynamic, in order to carry out a selective and comprehensive control that has an impact on the animal, human and environmental health.

Geographic tongue, also known as benign migratory glossitis, is a benign chronic inflammatory condition of the tongue. It is characterized by erythematous lesions with filiform papillae atrophy, surrounded by white limited areas in the dorsal and lateral aspects of the tongue, producing a map-like aspect. This lesions change in size and shape with time, and are characterized by periods of exacerbation and remission without scaring. The cause is unknown, but multiple associations have been described, which will be discussed below

RESUMO

The aims of this study were to determine the frequency of egg shedding (percentage of egg-positive faecal samples) and faecal egg counts (FEC) over 13 months in two different breeds of ewes, both pregnant and non-pregnant, in a mountainous region of central Mexico. Additionally, the effect of ivermectin and albendazole treatments on FEC reduction was recorded. The study also aimed to relate temperature and rainfall to FEC. The gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) third-stage larvae genera recovered from both faeces and grassland pastures in a temperate region were also assessed. Faecal samples were collected from ewes at monthly intervals for 13 months to investigate the FEC population of GIN larvae, their concentration and genera in grass samples collected from grazed and rested pastures. Egg-shedding frequency ranged from 0 to 92% and FEC from 0 to 12,000 eggs per g faeces (epg), with counts in Suffolk higher than in Dorset ewes. The identified genera were Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Teladorsagia, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum, Bunostomum, Nematodirus and Strongyloides. Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus were the most common genera. The number of L3 was higher in grazing lands than in those at rest. The highest FEC were recorded in the dry season due to peripartum, but the highest L3 counts were recorded in the rainy season. The coexistence of species of different geographical distributions at this site may be because there is a confluence of Nearctic and Neotropical geographic regions; thus, despite the temperate climate, tropical species can be found. Additionally, this study suggests that increasing temperatures could favour the presence of different tropical GIN species together with typical temperate-zone GIN species.

RESUMO

Whether conceptualized as comorbid ADD with psychosis or as a distinct diagnostic entity--ADD psychosis--patients with features of both ADD and psychosis benefit from treatment with psychostimulants. It is hypothesized that psychostimulants have their therapeutic effect via amelioration of frontal lobe dysfunction.

RESUMO

Literature searches dating back to 1968 were conducted through Psychlit and Medline services to review the scientific literature on EEG biofeedback treatment of ADD. While anecdotal and case reports cite promising evidence, methodological problems coupled with a paucity of research precludes any definitive conclusions as to the efficacy of enhanced alpha and hemisphere-specific EEG biofeedback training. One of the more promising EEG biofeedback treatment paradigms involves theta/beta training. Studies have reported that academic, intellectual, and behavioral gains have been attained with this approach. Significant behavioral and cognitive changes have also been reported following SMR training. However, research into these treatment approaches has also been marred by methodological inadequacies and lack of sufficient follow-up studies. A number of recommendations for future research into this treatment approach are made.

RESUMO

Delusions usually respond to antipsychotic medications. When delusions are present within certain diagnostic categories, however, pharmacotherapy other than or in addition to antipsychotic agents is indicated. Many delusional disorders have been found to respond to pimozide even after failing to respond to other antipsychotic agents. Delusions accompanied by affective symptomatology should be treated with both antipsychotic medications and antidepressants or mood stabilizers. When delusions are the result of a medical condition, treatment of the medical condition may lead to resolution of the delusion.

RESUMO

The present study explored possible connections between neuroleptic dose and the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenic patients. Zero-order correlations between medication dose as measured in CPZ equivalent units and standardized assessments of positive (hallucinations, delusions) and negative (blunted affect, poor rapport) symptoms were carried out on 28 hospitalized schizophrenics. While dose was positively related to over-all negative symptom scores as well as specific negative symptoms, no relation was found with positive scores. The discussion focused on the possibility that negative symptoms might represent medication-induced side effects and the need for further research.

RESUMO

Diverse pharmacologic agents have been reported to be effective in treating negative schizophrenic symptoms (NSS). In light of this large and growing literature, as well as of reconceptualizations of the underlying pathophysiology of NSS, the time may have come to reject models that assume "irreversibility" of NSS. However, flaws in existing studies prevent closure regarding the reversibility of, and by inference the treatability of, NSS. Guidelines for future studies are articulated, e.g., the need to distinguish primary from secondary NSS, to include drug-free subjects with a predominance of NSS in clinical trials, and to use well-validated and psychometrically sound instruments for assessing NSS.
